Federal bid fund a boost for Brisbane
The Federal Government this month announced a dedicated fund to attract more global conventions, exhibitions and incentives to Australia, offering Brisbane an opportunity to increase the city’s international competitiveness and attract more business events.
Trade, Tourism and Investment Minister Steven Ciobo announced Tourism Australia’s Boosting Business Events Bid Fund Program – an investment of $12 million across the next three years.
Brisbane Convention Bureau General Manager Juliet Alabaster said the program would offer financial support to help secure events bringing economic benefits to Brisbane.
“This bid fund will help Brisbane bring significant international business events to our city, which will help boost trade and investment, and assist local industries showcase their capability on the world stage,” Ms Alabaster said.
“With Brisbane becoming an increasingly sought-after destination for conferences and events, the Brisbane Convention Bureau believes this funding will improve the prospect of Brisbane as an ideal destination for business events.
“Business events not only stimulate the visitor economy, but they also generate knowledge sharing, trade, investment and employment, which has clearly received recognition from the Federal Government through this announcement.
“This is the first time the Federal Government has offered funding for business events through a bid fund, marking one of the most important developments for the business events industry in recent memory.
“Brisbane offers a unique opportunity to experience everything Australia has to offer in the one location, and we hope this funding will increase the opportunities for us to share our city with the world.”
Mr Ciobo said the funds would go towards covering costs associated with the delivery of an event within Australia, ensuring every dollar goes back into the Australian economy and supports local jobs through accommodation bookings, transport venues and more.
The program will be managed by Tourism Australia through its Business Events Australia unit to secure more business events and grow this lucrative sector, currently estimated to be worth between $14 billion and $28 billion to the Australian economy.
The Boosting Business Events Bid Fund builds upon Tourism Australia’s extensive activities in the business events space to increase awareness and demand for Australia as a business events destination.
