Australias biggest solar powered Christmas tree to shine bright
28 November 2018
Brisbane’s biggest Christmas tree will burst into a kaleidoscope of colour this Friday evening, kick-starting Brisbane’s massive festive-season program.
Lord Mayor Graham Quirk will flick the switch for the Lighting of the Brisbane City Christmas Tree, presented by St.George Bank, in King George Square with celebrations starting at 6.30pm.
Cr Quirk said the 22-metre civic tree would glitter with an animated mesh of twinkling lights, topped by a dazzling star.
“The Lighting of the Christmas Tree is the traditional way of opening our massive Christmas celebrations here in Brisbane,” he said.
“Our city tree is a sight to behold – the tree and its star will sparkle with 11,000 LED lights, including 1.3 kilometres of lights spread across the tree’s branches.
“The tree is sustainably powered through a solar power source in the form of Santa’s Workshop, which contains solar panels and a battery bank.”
Cr Quirk said he was looking forward to welcoming thousands of families to King George Square on Friday evening for the official lighting of the tree.
“The audience will be treated to a welcome to special performances by ARIA award-winning performer Samantha Jade and the Australian Girls Choir with an appearance by Santa and his elves," he said.
“It will be a fun and magical evening for the whole family and the perfect way to end an evening Christmas shopping in The City.”
The Lord Mayor will be joined by seven-year-old Zayviar Mullins, who was nominated by the Starlight Children’s Foundation for the special honour of flicking the switch to officially light the Christmas Tree.
Starlight will be selling Starlight Wands throughout the celebration, to raise funds and help brighten the lives of seriously ill children and their families this Christmas.
Cr Quirk said the Lighting of the Christmas tree would kick off a month of free festivities to celebrate Christmas around The City, Roma Street Parkland and South Bank.
