Brisbane's population and wages on the up

Brisbane’s population is growing and wages are higher than the national average, data from the latest Census has revealed. The city's population has risen by almost 10 per cent in the past five years from 2.07 million to 2.27 million, according to the Census data released last month.  

Brisbane is home to almost half of all Queensland residents. 

Our city’s growing population was also enjoying higher wages than the average Australian, with the weekly average personal wage in Brisbane sitting at $703 per week, compared to the weekly average personal wage in Australia of $662. 

The weekly average family income in Brisbane was $1821, while the weekly average family income in Australia was $1734, the Census data revealed.

Of the occupied properties in the Greater Brisbane area, 76 per cent were houses; 10 per cent were semi-detached, row or terrace houses or townhouses; and 12 per cent were flats or apartments.

Twenty-six per cent of all occupied properties within Brisbane were owned outright, almost 36 per cent were owned with a mortgage and 34.5 per cent were rented, with the median weekly rent sitting at $335 and the median monthly mortgage repayments at $1861. 

Brisbane Marketing CEO Brett Fraser said the latest Census data reflected what Brisbane residents had known for a long time - Brisbane is one of the best locations in the world to live and work. 

“Not only are the people in Brisbane warm and welcoming, we have a lifestyle that is second-to-none and there is a real sense of optimism within the city,” Mr Fraser said.

“A momentum has been building recently and the word is getting out as Brisbane emerges as a leader in the international race to attract people who are drawn to the opportunities available throughout the city, across a range of industries.

“You just have to look at some of the recognition Brisbane is receiving internationally, including our ranking in the international Global Cities of the Future report that placed Brisbane in fourth position in the Foreign Direct Investment Strategy category and in 10th position for human capital and lifestyle – just one spot behind London.”

“These results prove that Brisbane has a reputation for being economically resilient, with a strong and connected business community, as well as a city with outstanding education, business, employment and lifestyle opportunities.”

Brisbane’s outer fringes were proving the most attractive to new residents, with North Lakes, in Moreton Bay attracting 72,000 people, an increase of 39 per cent since 2011, making it the fastest growing region in the state. 

Ormeau/Oxenford - between Brisbane and the Gold Coast - was the second fastest growing region with its population growing by 28.7 per cent to 121,000 people.
